He ran from the western section, where he had been checking in with patrols to keep busy, and jumped over a patio wall as the mortars began falling. An explosion rocked the ground as he landed, and knocked him off balance; he fell on his left shoulder. He let out a yell and lost his grip on a pistol. The gun flew from his right hand.

The mortar rounds continued to fall but none touched the house. Bright flashes from the explosions, followed by thick black smoke, filled the property. Valdes coughed as he crawled for his gun. Grasping the pistol once again, he rose. He heard his men—he still thought of them that way—rushing to meet the invaders. Choppers in the distance, getting closer. Their whipping rotor blades sounded louder than normal, but only because Valdes knew who rode in the helicopters. Assault troops who planned to drop onto the roof of the house. The reason the mortar shells didn’t touch the building.

Battle sounds filled the night. Guns cracked, men screamed; Valdes knew the Guardado elements were tough, but outnumbered. His “partners” weren’t leaving anything to chance. They had every intention of taking the Guardado holdings for themselves, and cutting him out. He was sure.

Rage filled him.

He’d asked for their help, but now they were hanging him out to dry.

His dream of a Super Cartel was on the line, and he wasn’t going down without a fight. If he had the precious tablet, he’d have a bargaining chip to stay in the game.

He ran toward the house with an idea of how to intercept the woman. If he hurried, he might catch her.
